I've been working on my first project guitar. It's a '59 blacktop les paul (At least I hope it's going to look that way) I've used Z-poxy finishing resin before laying down the color and despite my best efforts, once I laid down the color , I noticed an area on the back where I sanded through the resin to the wood. I'm using the KTM waterbased finish. How do I fix this? Can I apply more resin on top of my first color coat? Should I break out the sand paper and try to get back down to the resin surface again? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance - Kevin G |

Kevin, You mentioned a color. Was it black? Is it under the KTM9? I assume you sanded through this color coat and into the wood before the KTM9 was applied? Color coats are pretty easy to fix. Much easier than clear coats. Depending on your answers I can possibly offer some advice. |

Thanks for the welcome guys. Robbie, Yes I did the Z-poxy sealer first and sanded through that to the wood. I didn't notice it until I added the color on top of that. Now it's very smooth everywhere except where I sanded through the Z-poxy which you can see the wood grain. The color coat I used was 20% color tone water based pigment and 80% KTM9. Thanks for the help. |

What kind of wood are you trying to fill? Basically you made your own spray paint by adding color to the KTM9. The product you are using is a high solids product and should eventually cover the spot depending on how porous the wood is you are trying to fill. Another option is to scuff sand the area and then use a filler to fix that area where you sanded through. Since you are using a colorcoat the filler could be any color. Even bondo would work. I would probably use a water based filler. You could also sand the area and use zpoxy to fill again and then spray over the top with the colorcoat. Let us know how it goes. |
